Objectives
After we won the French SEO competition "Mangeur de cigogne" with this page hosted on another of our web sites, we've decided to enter the seraphim proudleduck contest with the following goals:
1- Have fun
This is the easy part. No doubt the seraphim proudleduck contest will be another opportunity to meet new "SEO addict" friends and enjoy the competition in a good spirit. Competitors will deploy their creativity to reach top position in google on 1/1/2005. We'll for sure make the best of it...
2- Explore Google
SEO contests are unique opportunities to explore the ever changing algorithm of the number 1 search engine.
Of course SEO competition is not "real life" SEO. The "exotic" techniques we will test to optimize the ranking of our seraphim proudleduck page are not
directly applicable to SEO a "normal" website. They are far too risky... unless you are ready to gamble with your business.
Anyway, we learnt a lot about Google from "mangeur de cigogne" and will learn more from "seraphim proudleduck".
3- Challenge big websites
We won the "mangeur de cigogne" competition with a pretty big and well ranked website. This was a key element in our victory: the support the whole site brought to the mangeur de cigogne page was decisive. Today, we enter the seraphim proudleduck competition with a brand new domain name, unknown from Google so far. We'll see whether starting from scratch, we can manage to challenge big websites.
4- Demonstrate that W3C compliance is not a handicap
Some say W3C compliance enhances search engine ranking. That's unfortunately not true. XHTML and CSS make light code and fluid websites, for the benefit of their visitors. But SEO has nothing to do with this. Top SERPS websites are often full of <table> and <font> tags. Our seraphim proudleduck page is XHTML valid and tableless. At least we will try to prove that W3C compliance is not incompatible with "Design to Search Engines". Pretty challenging...
5- Earn the £1000 prize
Well, we do not really care about that... but will accept the money. Let's say it is a bonus.
6- PageRank and big boobs ;)
